Libeled Lady

Jean Harlow plays the fiancé of newspaper editor (Spencer Tracy) who must pretend to be married to another newspaperman (William Powell) in order to snare heiress Myrna Loy in a scandal and thereby stop her from suing Tracy’s employer for libel in this undeservedly neglected screwball comedy scripted by George Oppenheimer, Howard Emmet Rogers, and Maurine Watkins.

Although getting top billing Harlow is a tad too rough and ready to convince as Tracy’s future spouse but the gags fly thick and fast, the dialogue is snappy and the cast are all excellent in their parts, the film rolling along with gusto to the inevitable conclusion.

FYI: Harlow was engaged to Powell at the time but she died suddenly the following year of uremic poisoning at the age of 26..
